Trigeminal Nerve

The Trigeminal Nerve

The trigeminal nerve is one of 12 pairs of nerves that are attached to the brain.  The nerve has three branches that conduct sensations from the upper, middle, and lower portions of the face, as well as the oral cavity, to the brain.

The occipital nerves are a group of nerves that arise from the C2 and C3 spinal nerves.  They innervate the posterior scalp up as far as the vertex and other structures as well, such as the ear.  There are three major occipital nerves in the human body: the greater occipital nerve (GON), the lesser (or small) occipital nerve (LON), and the third (or least) occipital nerve (TON).

I believe the pain experienced with these 2 nerve systems are simply a symptom of Cluster Headache Disorder and do not need to be addressed directly.  Dilated blood vessals put pressure on the nerves and cause severe pain during a cluster attack.  While there are various treatments including drugs or even surgery, this should most certainly only be considered as a very last resort.
