About Salt

How Much Salt

You really really need it.  Salt is the most essential mineral in our body.  Sodium actually plays a variety of important roles in the body.  Sodium not only helps maintain healthy fluid balance, it also contributes to proper muscle contraction and nerve impulse conduction.  Our recommended intake is 2300 mg(1 tsp) of Sodium in addition to that you may be getting in your diet.  This should not be an issue for most people unless you already consume too much through processed foods.  It is estimated that around 75% of a persons intake is from processed foods, if you eat a good diet without them chances are you NEED this extra amount daily.  I encourage EVERYBODY to read all links below prior deciding on a Low Sodium Diet.

There are large studies that have found 3000 mg to 5000 mg to be optimal intake.  Less than 3000 mg greatly increases risk of early death, up to a factor of TIMES 8 (800%).  Especially in heart related issues.  The USRDA is still set at 2300 mg, a less than optimal level we now know.  Sodium Deficiency can cause irregular heartbeat and palpatations among other issues.

From a study of 133,118 people by the NIH regarding Daily Salt Intake: "Interpretation: Compared with moderate sodium intake, high sodium intake is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events and death in hypertensive populations (no association in normotensive population), while the association of low sodium intake with increased risk of cardiovascular events and death is observed in those with or without hypertension. These data suggest that lowering sodium intake is best targeted at populations with hypertension who consume high sodium diets."

As you know, cluster headaches can cause a lot of sweating which further reduces the amount of salt in your body.  This is why I feel this Electrolyte Replacement Therapy I spell out here helps us combat the headaches better.
